Putting Health First: My Journey Through Stage 4 Cancer and Reclaiming Strength
Don’t let cancer define
For years, health and fitness were a big part of my life. I followed the ketogenic diet religiously, fueling my body with healthy fats and proteins, and I found solace and strength in running.
Hitting the pavement or the trails wasn't just exercise-it was my therapy, my time to reflect, and my way to stay grounded. But even with these strong foundations, nothing could have prepared me for the fight of my life: a stage 4 cancer diagnosis.
Hearing those words shattered me. It felt like all the work I had put into my health, my body, and my well-being had been ripped away. But as I sat with the reality of my diagnosis, I realized something powerful: all those years of prioritizing my health had given me a strong foundation to fight back. My body was already conditioned to endure, to push through challenges, and to persevere.
The ketogenic diet, which had long been a cornerstone of my lifestyle, became even more critical during my battle with cancer. Research shows that the keto diet can help reduce inflammation and regulate blood sugar-two things that were vital as I underwent treatment.
While I had already been keto for years, it took on a new meaning as l used it as a tool to support my body through one of its darkest times.
Running also played an unexpected role during my journey. There were days I couldn't run-days when my body felt too weak, when the treatment took everything out of me-but I never stopped being a runner. Even when I couldn't lace up my shoes, I held onto the mindset that running had taught me: one step at a time. Every small effort mattered, and every moment of movement, no matter how small, was a step toward reclaiming my health.
This year, after what felt like an uphill battle with no end in sight, I beat stage 4 cancer. It's still surreal to say it out loud. Beating cancer wasn't just about survival-it was about rediscovering who I am and what I was capable of.
With cancer behind me, I felt ready to take my fitness journey in a new direction. At the start of this year, I introduced strength training into my routine. After years of being a runner and relying on cardio to keep me grounded, strength training was a whole new challenge. Walking into the weight room was intimidating at first, but it quickly became a place of empowerment.
Lifting heavier weights each week reminded me of my resilience and the strength I've built-not just physically, but mentally and emotionally, too.
If there's one thing I've learned from this journey, it's that health isn't something you can put off. For years, I thought my diet and running habits were enough, but cancer taught me that health is an ongoing, multi-faceted commitment. It's about adapting, evolving, and continuing to fight for yourself-even when life throws you its worst.
As I look ahead, I'm grateful for the years I spent building my health before cancer because they gave me the tools to fight back. The ketogenic diet, running, and now strength training have become the pillars of my post-cancer life, helping me rebuild my body and my spirit.
If you've been putting off your health or waiting for the "right time" to make a change, don't wait. Start small, stay consistent, and trust in the process. I'm living proof that even when life throws the unimaginable at you, a strong foundation can make all the difference.
This year isn't just about beating cancer for me—it's about reclaiming my life, my strength, and my future. And I'm just getting started.
