My youngest son always joked, "Here we go, she's gonna pull the cancer card." And you know what? He wasn't wrong.
Sometimes, I played it for laughs. Like when there was one piece of cake left, and I'd casually say, "You wouldn't deny a cancer patient, would you?" He'd roll his eyes but still hand it over. Or when the dishwasher needed unloading, and I'd conveniently remind him, "You know, I do have cancer." He never fully bought it, but more often than not, he'd do it anyway.
Other times, it was more than a joke. It was a quiet plea for a little grace. When I forgot something important because my brain was fried from chemo. When I canceled plans at the last minute because exhaustion hit me out of nowhere. When I just didn't have the energy to explain, apologize, or keep up like I used to.
Cancer takes so much-your strength, your independence, your ability to pretend everything is fine. So if pulling the cancer card meant getting a tiny piece of control back, even for a moment, I wasn't above playing it. And my son, for all his teasing, always understood.
