How to beat cancer

We need freedom in every area of our lives

The picture is me with the little girl discussed in this post just months after the finality of this story.

The Freedom Brigades talk about and focus on restoring inalienable rights endowed to us by Our Creator. This is often done in the political realm, as many rights are being stripped obviously in that arena.

We also have freedom from sickness and disease. Many people I know continue to fight cancer, and I have lost some of the best people on the planet to this disease. The poison we consume in our food, in the air, and even in some of the clothing we wear causes this monster that is ripping lives apart. I have good news.

You have authority over cancer through Jesus Christ. Here what happened in my life:

In my mid-twenties, I noticed some lumps on my neck and brought it up to my doctor. He told me they were swollen lymph nodes, and I shouldn’t worry about it. I went on with my life. I lived hundreds of miles away from any family and was very independent, and constantly stressed living as a single mom waiting tables.

It is important to not allow yourself to be stressed in life. Do what you can to protect peace in yourself. It affects your mental and physical health.

I went back to college and earned my first degree and was living life. At a doctor’s appointment, I casually mentioned that the lumps were still there. This was several years after the first mention. I had just ignored them because the doctor assured me I could, and I didn’t have the time for anything else. This time, he decided to do a biopsy.

The biopsy came back positive for thyroid cancer. They did an ultrasound of my neck to see that it was spread all through my neck and was very close to my lung. I lived in Indiana at that time. They sent me to a specialist in Indianapolis because of the proximity to the lung.

I was working as a paralegal at the time. The hospital requested that a living will be on file before surgery. As a young mother with 3 boys, that was most unsettling. I had never had surgery and had recently lost my favorite person in the world (my grandfather) to cancer. I was scared.

I joked for weeks that slitting someone’s throat is actually how you kill someone, not cure them. I had serious anxiety about everything happening. When I was in the hospital room, prepped for surgery and about to go in, Pastor Ralph Holdeman with his wonderful wife, Kathy, showed up. They drove an hour just for those few minutes and I am so grateful they did. They prayed with me. I was already quoting Psalm 23 a lot. He looked me in the eyes and told me to not let fear have a place.

That was it. I made the decision right then. On January 3, 2008, a lifetime decision was made. Whatever I had to walk, whatever laid ahead in treatments, even death, I would walk it, but I refused to fear it. Fear would no longer have a place. I continue to live with that resolve.

The surgery was supposed to be a 3-hour thyroidectomy. It ended up being a 7-hour neck dissection. They removed 9 lymph nodes and my thyroid. They had to stretch my vocal cords because the cancer was so intertwined in them that the doctor wasn’t sure I would get my voice back.

I did not even know drain tubes were a thing! A horrible way to find out about those is to wake up with 6 coming out of your chest! I went through the arduous recovery and went in for yet another scan.

They didn’t get it all. I needed to have some radiation treatments. That meant arranging to not be around my children for days at a time. Remember, I am doing this with no close family. I had dealt with a toxic relationship that didn’t allow many friends. This was a trying time.

Before we could finish treatment, I got pregnant. I stopped treatment to let the baby grow.

There were many extra tests and procedures during the pregnancy to make sure the baby was healthy. I had my first baby girl, and she was completely normal. She is actually exceptional. She is smart, beautiful, and athletic.

After the pregnancy, we did a blood test to see how rapidly the cancer had grown. The results were alarming. The cancer had progressed aggressively. They scheduled a full body scan to see where we needed to operate next, which would commence almost immediately. It was so close to my lung before that it was likely we were looking at that.

I did not talk to many about what I was going through. I am careful about who I share what with because everyone carries energy that is effective. Many don’t realize it and affect their own lives and those around them negatively, unaware that it is their own thoughts and words that bring issues.

I was raised in an evangelical church. I grew up seeing people get healed. I prayed for a lady when I was 12 years old and watched her leg grow in front of everyone. I knew about healing. I also saw many hopelessly begging at the altar. I refused to be one of those, so I had not asked the church to pray for me. I had not asked God to heal me. I used scripture to comfort me and had asked Him to walk with me. I had not asked Him to take this from me.

I was at a church service and a man came to me before service with a message from the Lord. He told me that if I didn’t fight this the way I knew how, it would kill me. I knew in my spirit it was a Word from the Lord.

We started worship. During one of the songs, the pastor stopped playing the piano and asked me to come up front. He and the saints prayed for me. In my thoughts, I told God that I knew He could heal me if He wanted to as I surrendered to the Lord. In that moment, I very clearly heard “IT IS GONE”. I KNEW in my spirit that God had spoken and that it was gone. I knew it with more assurance than anything.

I even declared publicly to the church that Sunday and the following that God healed me. I wasn’t “believing for” anything. I knew that it was done.

The church had just come off a 21 day fast that I did not participate in, but I know I reaped the rewards.

Doubt has a way of trying to change things. I went for the body scan in the next days and read healing scriptures out loud every day until the doctor’s visit to combat natural doubt. Saying scriptures out loud in your bedroom by yourself feels foolish at first. It is powerful and does not feel foolish in time. When we take the power of our words and speak the Word of God, it sets LIFE in motion.

My grandmother had planned to come and stay with me when I went to the doctor because she was going to help me take care of my children with the surgery that was to commence after the scan showed where to operate.

I told her I was healed and that she didn’t need to drive 650 miles. She graciously said she would come anyway.

Dr. Bawa was the doctor that gave me the results. His exact words were, “There is no trace of cancer in your body”. Then, he asked me what happened.

In complete awe, I told the Lord that I would give Him the first part of every day I have on this Earth. I continue that and will. I start every day with prayer and in The Word.

Here are the take-aways of this true story:

1. The name of Jesus is above the name of cancer and all disease. This applies to depression, and any other disease whether it is mental or physical.

2. Cancer is a disease that can be commanded out of your body.

3. Jesus said that some require fasting AND prayer.

4. You can’t have faith and fear. They are opposites. Whichever you choose is what will be produced.

5. Be purposeful with how you use the energy God gave you. The power of life and death is in the tongue. Watch what you say.

6. You don’t have to do anything but be real with God. He will meet you where you are at.

7. Do what you can to be at peace in your soul. The battlefield for everything starts in our thought process.

Be blessed and walk in freedom!
